The Career Compass: A Step-by-Step Guide to Navigating Your Next Career Move with Clarity
Feeling stuck in your career?
Even the most high-performing professionals hit a crossroads, unsure whether to stay in their current role, pivot, or push for a promotion. Instead of making reactive decisions, the most successful leaders pause, reflect, and create a clear roadmap. Trust me—I‘ve been there. When you’re ready for a change (or worse, feel forced to make a change) but don’t feel clear about the direction you want to go in, making a decision about next steps can feel paralyzing.
That’s exactly why I created The Career Compass..
This step-by-step guide will help you:
Gain clarity on what’s missing in your career.
Decide whether to stay or make a strategic move.
Optimize your resume and relationships for new opportunities..
Step 1: Reflect on What You Really Want
Before jumping into job boards, take a step back. Clarity comes from asking the right questions.
Use the REF Method:
Ask yourself the following questions to get to clarity about your next steps.
Reflect – What’s no longer working for you? Is it the company culture, your growth trajectory, or the work itself?
Explore – What are your core values, strengths, and motivations? Have they changed over time?
Find – Who do you want to be in this next chapter? What kind of leader do you want to evolve into?
Action Step: Write down the three biggest frustrations in your current role and the three most important things you need in your next step.
Step 2: Decide Whether to Stay or Go
Making this decision can feel overwhelming, but these three key questions will bring clarity:
Are You Growing? If your role isn’t stretching your leadership skills or preparing you for executive opportunities, it may be time to move on.
Does Your Work Align With Your Strengths & Values? Are you spending most of your time doing work that plays to your strengths? Does the company’s mission still align with your values?
How Do You Feel About Mondays? Temporary stress is normal. Chronic dread is a sign that something deeper needs to change.
Action Step: Read 4 Simple Tips for Planning Your Next Career Move to get intentional about your decision.
Step 3: Refresh Your Resume with a Results-Driven Approach
If it’s been years since you last updated your resume, it’s time to give it a serious executive-level upgrade.
Use Google’s XYZ Formula:
Accomplished [X] by doing [Y], resulting in [Z].
Example: “Boosted team productivity by 25% by implementing [new software], saving 10+ hours weekly.”
Focus on measurable impact, not job duties.
Showcase leadership contributions and strategic decision-making.
Use metrics whenever possible.
Action Step: Rewrite three bullet points on your resume using the XYZ formula. Update your resume before you have to. It’s easier.
Step 4: Build Relationships That Open Doors
Most career opportunities come through relationships, not applications. If your network feels stale, now is the time to reactivate it.
How to Start:
Reach out to former colleagues, mentors, or peers with a simple message:
“Hey [Name], I’ve been reflecting on my career and am thinking about making a change. I’ve always admired your trajectory and would love to hear how things are going on your end. Would you be open to catching up soon? Let me know!”Make networking feel natural. It’s about genuine connections, not transactional asks.
Action Step: Read Why You Should Build Relationships and Network for a fresh, no-BS approach to expanding your circle.
